The emerald ash borer (EAB) is only confirmed in Boulder so far as of August 2015. However, we know it is likely to spread in Colorado as it has spread across the United States. The EAB has killed millions of ash trees and emerald ash borer prevention is a high priority to save ash trees. Let’s take a closer look at the tried and true method we know works to prevent ash tree infestation of the emerald ash borer.
Pictured here is an adult emerald ash borer (EAB) with its wings spread. The EAB is metallic green and approximately ½” long. This beetle’s larvae are pictured on the right. Before becoming an adult it will eat the ash tree underneath the visible bark. Once matured, the adult will bore a hole through the bark of ash trees, and fly out up to half a mile.
There are many options available to prevent or treat emerald ash borer infestations on ash trees. ArborScape chooses to utilize methods that are tried and true. Personally, I want someone to use ways that I know will work to prevent the EAB from infesting and killing my ash tree and although there are many treatments out there that say they work, I only want to use the ones that arborists already know they work because they have been effectively applying them already.
Certain chemicals need to be handled by licensed professionals as it is illegal to handle certain chemicals without training and licenses. It can be harmful to handle such products without the proper education to treat an infected tree properly without putting anyone or anything else in danger. It is important to hire a professional, insured, and licensed tree service business that has the experience and is licensed to handle chemical products to treat ash trees and prevent the ash borer from infestation.
Ash trees need a special treatment schedule and only licensed professional businesses are likely to provide the services correctly and reliably.
